On October 24, 1987, Richard Childress Racing made an announcement at Rockingham Speedway, then known as North Carolina Motor Speedway, that set in place one of the most iconic paint schemes in NASCAR Cup Series history.

That paint scheme used at its debut, however, never hit the track for a competitive lap. After years of familiar yellow-and-blue paint schemes on its iconic No. 3 Chevrolet, RCR used Rockingham as the setting for debuting a new black look while unveiling its new partnership with GM Goodwrench for the 1988 NASCAR Cup Series season. Team owner Richard Childress drove the new-look No. 3, that featured chrome silver numbers on the doors and roof, as well as chrome wheels, as a preview for what the team’s loyal fans would see on the track the following season.

When the winter ended and RCR brought its No. 3 car to DAYTONA International Speedway to kick off the 1988 season, the numbers on the new-look GM Goodwrench car were white. That look of the stylized No. 3 remained with the team throughout that season and became one of the most familiar and celebrated versions of a NASCAR paint scheme that revolutionized the on-track look of the sport.
