Years before Sam Mayer solidified his place as a race-winning and championship contending NASCAR Xfinity Series star for JR Motorsports, he was cutting his racing teeth on the short tracks of the Southeast with the same powerhouse team.

At just 15 years old, Mayer was a standout in the Late Model Stock Car ranks for JRM back in 2018. That season, he became a star of the future, but also paid homage to the legendary past of stock car racing with a special flashback paint scheme in a CARS Tour race at Hickory Motor Speedway. Mayer, along with Menards, ran a special retro scheme in a turn-back-the-clock race that resembled the famed “Gray Ghost” Oldsmobile driven by Buddy Baker in the 1970s and 1980s.
